Hi dph11
Welcome to the forums!
You raise a good question that I think a lot of other people will benefit from so I will go through the troubleshooting steps to identify your problem:
1 - So one of your cymbals has stopped working eh? Which cymabl has broken - for the purposes of this example lets say it is the left hand (yellow) cymbal.
2 - As you correctly said the first step is to swap the cymbals over, so unplug both cymbals first then remove the cymbal screws and take both cymbals off, then put the right (orange) cymbal onto the left side of the drumkit and put the left (yellow) cymbal onto the right side of the drumkit and test them - the best place to test anything like this is in the music studio where you create a new song.
There are now two possible outcomes, both of which we will go over now:
3a - The same cymbal does not work no matter which side of the drumkit it is on - in our example this would mean that the yellow cymbal does not work even when plugged into the right hand side of the drum kit, this will indicate the problem is with the cymbal itself (the other slight possibility is that BOTH of your cymbal cables are broken but you would know this as neither of your cymbal would have worked before you started)
3b - The same cymbal works only when plugged into the other side of the drumkit - in our example this means that the yellow cymbal is fine when plugged into the right side of the drumkit, but now the previously working orange cymbal is not working when plugged into the left side of the drumkit where the yellow cymbal started off. This means that the cymbal cable on the left hand side of the drumkit is broken and needs replacing.
Hope this helps, get back to us if you need any more help.
