Xbox 360 red ring of death fix

The Xbox 360 is a truly amazing games console but it can suffer more than its fair share of hardware faults.  The Red Ring of Death (or RRoD as it is better known) is one of the most common.  We have seen a few reasons why this happens but there are plenty of guides out there which can help you determine the exact cause of the fault.

Xbox 360 motherboards and chips often need a bit of attention and it can be worth an hour of preventative maintenance to keep your console healthy, even if there is no error.

Xbox 360 repair guide

Many RROD repair guides now come with video and some even have access to a support area, so it's worth looking into.  We do have a favourite here which is the highly recommended 'James Dean Xbox 360 RROD fix'  It's not free but he does provide some video tutorials and the price is fair for what you get.  There is support available and a 60 day money back guarantee, worth asking the question if you're buying a fix rather than trawling the internet for information.  The worst help we've seen is the 'cover it with a towel until it overheats' trick.  Guaranteed to fry your console and maybe start a small electrical fire.....

Guitar Hero playing robot

Well sort of anyway.....

Nicknamed "DeepNote" this collection of transistors, relays and LEDs forms part of a clever little project to read the notes from the screen. Quite basic circuitry which shouldn't cost the earth means we can see this being used to form a type of Guitar Hero Robot Wars. Fancy building one?

'Nuff said, here's the vid:

Westone Spectrum DX

If you're like us then you not only play the plastic but also have a few real instruments hanging around the house too.

I personally use an 80's Westone Spectrum as my main axe which gives me Fender-like sound for a decent price. Now some purists might argue the toss over this but I'll just say that I've owned 7 Stratocasters in the last 10 years and they have all been blown away by the last Westone. Not that I don't like Fenders (hey I've had 7 - remember?) but the action and general playability of the Westone just suits me down to the ground.

Sound quality is bassy at first but tweak those DiMarzio Humbuckers and you can emulate a Strat for a fraction of the price.

I have owned quite a few 'vintage' Japanese guitars - Matsumoko (who made the Westone until the factory burnt down), Ibanez etc to name a few - and find them very good, quality bits of kit. Because it didn't cost much to start with, I now have it on very cheap musical instrument insurance and everyone is happy, including the wife.

You can pick these up now at auction for silly money, sometimes cheaper than a crappy squire copy, and I guarantee you'll not be disappointed.

Alternative Guitar Hero?

May 8, 2009 by

Here's a look at some alternatives to the guitar hero game we all know and love.

First off, here's a guy from Creative demonstrating his drumming keyboard. I was so tempted to overdub some GH songs on this video.

If you think that was uncomfortable, watch these guys jamming on the Beamz.  It's a decent concept for an instrument and we'd all love a go on one, but don't ever dance like this in front of people or cameras.....

See what I mean, it's not big and it certainly ain't cool.  Some say that he dances like Steve here at GHR but I strongly disagree.  At least while he's sober anyway.

Either way, as a good rule of thumb, drums and axes get the chicks every time, not twiddling your fingers in the air and dancing like your drunk uncle at a wedding.....

I've been a fan of Korg ever since I bought one of their synths in the Eighties.  Never thought then that I'd be playing cooler tunes in 2 minutes on something as small as a Nintendo DS.  Somehow, they have managed to squeeze the MS10 onto a DS, a feat nothing short of a miracle.

From their website:

In addition to the two analog synth simulators and drum module, a 6-track/16-step sequencer enables precise control and provides a wide range of musical possibilities. Several units can be connected and played together through a wireless link, and this and other features make the Nintendo DS and KORG DS-10 almost limitless in their application - they can take you places that no single synthesizer can.

Well, at 4800 YEN it's a bit pricey but I can see that porting it to consoles is definitely viable now so we should see some boxes MAKING music instead of playing along in the near future.

Broken consoles to play guitar hero on

May 5, 2009 by

You're probably here because  you're pretty good at fixing things or like to have a go yourself.  With Guitar Hero, the accessories are now cheap enough second hand to be able to get another guitar or drumset to have an experiment with. We at GHR know a thing or two about consoles and have several rigs in place to test our kit. With Wii, Xbox, Playstation and DS now supporting GH, there's no reason not to get a cheap console and have more than one setup. That way, if something goes wrong with your repair, you can take more time to fix it if you need to or even compare the dead one with the working one.

If you're not worried about looks, there are plenty of abused and dropped consoles out there which still work. Here's a selection of the consoles currently available by auction which are completely broken, slightly damaged or just in need of a quick fix:

For the repair, I'd suggest you Google the problem and see if there are known fixes in place to make it an easier repair. For example, Googling "red ring of death" currently returns 1.9 million pages so it's pretty sure that this fix is not undocumented for the Xbox ;-)

Good luck and drop us a line if this helps you get a bargain that was a simple fix.
