Alternative Guitar Hero?

Here's a look at some alternatives to the guitar hero game we all know and love.

First off, here's a guy from Creative demonstrating his drumming keyboard. I was so tempted to overdub some GH songs on this video.

If you think that was uncomfortable, watch these guys jamming on the Beamz.  It's a decent concept for an instrument and we'd all love a go on one, but don't ever dance like this in front of people or cameras.....

See what I mean, it's not big and it certainly ain't cool.  Some say that he dances like Steve here at GHR but I strongly disagree.  At least while he's sober anyway.

Either way, as a good rule of thumb, drums and axes get the chicks every time, not twiddling your fingers in the air and dancing like your drunk uncle at a wedding.....

I've been a fan of Korg ever since I bought one of their synths in the Eighties.  Never thought then that I'd be playing cooler tunes in 2 minutes on something as small as a Nintendo DS.  Somehow, they have managed to squeeze the MS10 onto a DS, a feat nothing short of a miracle.

From their website:

In addition to the two analog synth simulators and drum module, a 6-track/16-step sequencer enables precise control and provides a wide range of musical possibilities. Several units can be connected and played together through a wireless link, and this and other features make the Nintendo DS and KORG DS-10 almost limitless in their application - they can take you places that no single synthesizer can.

Well, at 4800 YEN it's a bit pricey but I can see that porting it to consoles is definitely viable now so we should see some boxes MAKING music instead of playing along in the near future.

Snapped Cymbal Repair

May 6, 2009 by

Well its not the most complicated repair in the Guitarherorepair arsenal but there is not much about it on the web so I thought we would go through it (oh yes and it happened to me, on my kit yesterday!)

Problem:

While drumming like a hairy neanderthal you manage to hit the cymbal so hard it physically breaks the plastic holding it together.

Broken Cymbal

Solution

The fix here is superglue nice and simple, when joining hard plastics superglue joins pretty much as hard as the original bond, it is cheap, fast and simple (unless you end up gluing your fingers together!)

What you will need to do is:

  • Take the cymbal off
  • unscrew the back cover ( so it looks like the one in the picture above)
  • remove the rubber covering ( it is only held in place by a couple of spots of glue)
  • examine the extend of the crack so you know where to apply the glue
  • TOP TIP - breath heavily on the area to be glued just before you glue - superglue reacts with moisture in the air to make it harden so this just helps the process
  • hold it in position for a minute or two
  • reassemble and play

There are also some things you can do to prevent this problem happening

  • don't hit it too hard (duh!)
  • swap your cymbals around occasionally so one is not taking more abuse than the other
  • reinforce the area with strong glue before this happens (do not get any glue near the sensor, this will affect the sensitivity of the pads)

I can't decide weather this is a giant waste of time, a fake, or the most amazing tribute video I have ever seen! Have a look and decide for yourselves (p.s. keep your eye on the lights on the handlebars too - how long did this take to make?!?)

I know your thinking something after seeing that! Tell us below.

Broken consoles to play guitar hero on

You're probably here because  you're pretty good at fixing things or like to have a go yourself.  With Guitar Hero, the accessories are now cheap enough second hand to be able to get another guitar or drumset to have an experiment with. We at GHR know a thing or two about consoles and have several rigs in place to test our kit. With Wii, Xbox, Playstation and DS now supporting GH, there's no reason not to get a cheap console and have more than one setup. That way, if something goes wrong with your repair, you can take more time to fix it if you need to or even compare the dead one with the working one.

If you're not worried about looks, there are plenty of abused and dropped consoles out there which still work. Here's a selection of the consoles currently available by auction which are completely broken, slightly damaged or just in need of a quick fix:

For the repair, I'd suggest you Google the problem and see if there are known fixes in place to make it an easier repair. For example, Googling "red ring of death" currently returns 1.9 million pages so it's pretty sure that this fix is not undocumented for the Xbox ;-)

Good luck and drop us a line if this helps you get a bargain that was a simple fix.

Guitar Hero to put an end to obesity?

May 5, 2009 by

Well probably not, but playing a energetic game of guitar hero might go some way to helping you lose a few pounds for summer - good news! Now when my doctor asks me what exercise I do, I will have an answer for him!

Lets have a look at the numbers:

According to the calorie counter on about.com, playing guitar standing up will burn through 204 calories in an hour while drums will help you shed an impressive 272 calories in the same time.

Now a point of note, these figures are given for playing actual instruments in an actual band so, in order for the game figures to be anywhere close, we have to assume you are playing on hard or expert (yeah feel that burn!). But this is good news for any fatties out there, if you are good enough to be playing on hard or expert then you are used to putting in a few hours anyway so, just for fun, lets see how long you would have to play to loose any real weight!

According to a Gallup poll, the average American weighs 17lbs more than "ideal".

A pound of fat is roughly 3500 calories

17lbs of fat is around 59500 calories

To lose 59500 calories you only need to play guitar for 291.7hrs or drums for 218.8hrs.

Put more simply, if the average American was to play Guitar Hero, non stop, on hard or expert for 12 days on guitar or just 9 days on drums, we could have this whole thing sorted by next month, easy eh?

PLEASE NOTE

This is not advice or a good idea, just a frivolous play with numbers, don't try it - you will almost certainly die!

GH: Metallica UK pre-order offers (No Bass Pedal?)

May 4, 2009 by

While the US is happily bashing away at the crazy riffs on GH: Metallica, we in the UK have still got a few weeks until launch (29/05/09). We have been looking around at some of the Pre-order offers being advertised at the moment and the big news if that, unlike the US, there are no offers on a free second bass pedal to enable Expert+ to be a possibility.

We are hoping, as you are too, that someone will get this offer eventually. Play.com has got the pedals available for pre-order  separately (RRP £49.99, "special offer price" £39.99!?!) but we are still hoping to see the free bass bundle appear soon!

Other than that the other offers available on Preorder copies are:

  • Game and Gamestation will give you a download code to download the Album Death Magnetic to play in the game
  • HMV will give you a GH:Metallica T shirt and codes for special outfits for the band (80's & Zombie)

Another thing to point out is the price difference between the different platforms - at all stores you will pay £39.99 on Xbox & PS3, £29.99 on Wii and £24.99 on PS2.

Does it really cost £15 more to produce a copy of the game for PS3 than for PS2? Or do they think that PS3 owners will just pay an extra £15 so... well... they may as well just charge it!

Have a look at some great deals on Guitar Hero Metallica

Video: Invisible drums!

While the setup we have for Guitar Hero is great, do you ever wish the drums could be smaller? A bit easier to put away perhaps? Maybe storing them in your living room is an eyesore? Well this is what we need!

Come on Activision! The tech is out there, make it happen!
